Kalavrita is a region steeped in history and unparalleled natural beauty, drawing visitors throughout the year. For countless years, the Vouraikos River has embarked on its journey from Kalavrita, weaving through its namesake gorge before reaching Diakopto on the Corinthian Bay’s shore.
Approximately 120 years ago, the Odontotos rack railway began its scenic ascent from the seaside town of Diakopto, traveling alongside the river, traversing stunning bridges and burrowing through tunnels to reach Kalavrita. Since then, the river and the railway have shared a harmonious path.
The petite train has become an intrinsic part of the natural landscape, so much so that it appears to have always belonged there. Constructed with immense respect for the environment, the use of local stone and wood ensured that the gorge’s ecosystem remained untouched.
The craftsmanship is so seamless that it seems as if nature itself crafted it.The Odontotos is more than just a train; it’s a gateway to a unique adventure through the spectacular Vouraikos Gorge. This acclaimed track, stretching from Diakopto to Kalavrita, stands as a singular marvel in Greece. While it would take volumes to recount the rich tapestry of this area’s history, a journey on this train offers an authentic taste of its essence.
